A fine and very rare antique silver Bedouin bracelet from West Yemen. These pieces are very rare and missing in many collections.  This sample is made of silver and nicely engraved.  It has a beautiful patina and it´s in  excellent condition.

See similar design in  Silver Speaks, traditional Jewellery from the Middle East. Page 7.  The widest part at the end measures 4,5 cm  and the interior diameter is 5.5 cm. Weighs 66  grms.

 The exquisite granulation deco was made by the Bedihi family, once one of the most famous jewish jewellers in the XIX and early XX century.

  Old Bedouin  Arab Peninsula  toe ring with coral colored glass bead, probably from Saudi Arabia. Nice granulation  deco made on this low grade silver ring.

Antique Mediterranean Coral, Yemeni beads and Silver Hamza Necklace.

Beautiful necklace made mixing different antique beads. The berry beads are antique Bedihi yemen silver, and the red coral is antique coral from the Mediterranean Sea. The coral is around 150- 200 years old, undyed, untreated  and with a bright orange carmin colour.In the times of the Coffe Trade in the Levante area, Yemen used to receive italian red coral and silver Maria Theresia Thaler as payment for the trade of  coffe beans. The port of Mokha was the main port in the Tihama area,  where the coffe was planted and harvested. The red coral in Yemen was used as part of the dowry, being part 0f all traditional jewels worn on marriages, and later in special occasions like a new baby born. It had high value since ancient times as a symbol of protection and fertility.

The silver hamza was sourced from South Morocco and it´s beautifully engraved, showing hebrew sacred script.

Length with the chain 48 cm.  Weight 103 grms.   The hamza measures 6,5 cm by 4,5 cm.

Vintage Kazakhstan style silver ring.

 This beautiful ring has a important size, probably owned by a man. It´s made in the  kazakh style, with colorful glass backing, may come from a north Afghan Uzbek group.   The material is silver, gold powder and beads of turquoise.

The measures are 44 grms,  the top is 3,5 cm by 2,5 cm. The size is 8,5/ 18, 5 mm.

   Traditional lazem necklace from Yemen,  beautiful old bedouin metal piece from North Yemen.  This style of jewel was part of the dowry given to the bride before her marriage.  Beautiful engraved deco with flower patterns and small red coral beads on the coins. This beauty is made with Red and Black coral beads, combined with a variety of antique yemeni silver beads. The silver pieces are from the early XX century.

The Red Coral beads are Mediterranea antique coral from the sea fields around Sicily, they are untreated and undyed. The colour is delicate salmon.  This beads of coral have around 100 to 150 years.

I´m pleased to offer this Antique Bedihi  Silver Beads and Amber Necklace from Yemen. The Bedihi family was one of the most famous jewish silversmith  from Yemen, in the XIX  and early XX century.  Their filigree beads, and the way they applied the granulation technique is really exceptional.

This family emigrated to the Holy Land around the beginning of the XX century till the 1949.

This piece is really unique,  shows the Bedihi famous weaved filigree beads and six beautiful amber beads.

Understanding Middle Eastern Jewellery- The Hand of Fatima.

The hamsa hand (Arabic) or hamesh hand (Hebrew) is an old and still popular amulet for magical protection from the envious or evil eye. The words hamsa and hamesh mean “five” and refer to the digits on the hand. The alternative Islamic name for this charm is the Hand of Fatima, in reference to the daughter of Mohammed, Fatima Zahra. For the Jewish community the name for it is the Hand of Miriam, in reference to the sister of Moses and Aaron. In the jewish communities is more likely to be found in the Sephardic Jewry more than the Ashkenazi Jewelry. (more…)

Why Bedouin Jewellery has such an important cultural value?

Collecting Middle Eastern jewelery  has become an act of cultural preservation. There´s some urgency in acquiring, collecting and recording the uses and history of Middle Eastern silver jewellery.

One of the pleasures of Middle East living used to be shopping for old jewelry—especially old Bedouin jewelry, rich in intricate silverwork, coral, carnelian and pretty stones picked up from the hills and sands during the Bedouin’s movements.

Nowadays, the handmade jewellery that once graced the persons of desert nomads is disappearing. The Bedouins themselves are exchanging it for modern pieces jewellery. The jewellers in the cities are breaking the jewels and remodeling it for modern pieces. Artisans who once made the jewelry are retiring or changing the way they work. The Majestic Art Of Silversmithing in Yemen.

In Yemen, the art of silversmithing reach a remarkable level, comparing with other crafts, and it can be identified by it´s own technicques and icons. It´s one of the most recognized and famous arts from the country.
The variety of bracelets, rings , necklaces, head ornaments, and the demand of the population for this items, shows the importance given to this craft. Shumaylat, Sana´a 1930.

Elaborated shumaylat bracelet made in Yemen.
They were part of the outfit of the Jewish bride and new mother, given to the bride by her father as dowry or by her betrothed as a wedding gift.
Fashioned in Sana´a foremost Jewish silversmiths, they were among the finest example of Yemenite filigree work (shabk).
This bracelet is made of pure silver and shows some coral detailing. It´s decorated with a dense filigree net over a smooth base. Finest webs of  filigree combine into rossette motifs, with clusters of granulation.
